Caring for your 4" plants
Your 4" potted clone is ready to take the next step for health development:
-
Transplant into a 1 to 2 gallon pot as an intermediate step.
-
Once your transplant is nicely rooted, it's time to transplant into its final pot
-
If you're growing outdoors, transplant into a 5-15 gal pot for your final pot. Indoors do a 2-5 gal pot
-
-
This gives your young plant enough room to develop without overwhelming its delicate root system.
-
Transplanting directly into a large pot can lead to overwatering, root stagnation, or transplant shock.
Adjustment & Hardening Off
After transplanting, your clone needs time to adapt to its new environment. Hardening off is the process of slowly introducing clones to outdoor conditions and sunlight intensity. This transition usually takes 1 to 2 weeks. The sun's full intensity can damage a clone/younger plant, so you will want to ease them into the intensity of the sunlight. Here’s how:
Light Cycle:
-
In Veg
-
Clones are typically kept under 18 hours of light at our indoor facility before they go out to dispensaries.
-
Ask your dispensary what light cycle the clone has been under.
-
If they’ve been under 24-hour light at the dispensary, reduce gradually to an 18/6 cycle (18 hours on, 6 hours off) once transplanted to acclimate and grow your plants in the vegetative state.
-
-
In Flower
-
When you're ready to flower your plants, switch to a 12/12 light cycle: 12 hours on, 12 hours off.
-
-
Sunlight Acclimation:
Clones are sensitive to full sun. To prevent sun stress you can use one of these options:-
Use a greenhouse
-
Move plants indoors/outdoors gradually
-
Use a 30–40% shade cloth during the first 1–2 weeks
-
-
Airflow:
Keep a gentle breeze (fans) on your plants. This not only aids hardening off but also helps develop stronger stalks.
Proper Watering Technique
Overwatering clones is a very common mistake. It’s crucial to provide enough water without oversaturating the root zone.
-
Allow for a dry-down period between waterings.
-
This encourages the roots to stretch and search within the pot for moisture and nutrients, helping to develop a robust root ball.
-
It’s important to let the pot dry slightly, but not so much that the foliage starts to wilt.
-
Visible stress from dryness can impact the overall health and development of your clones.
-
-
Use the weight of the pot as your guide:
-
If it feels noticeably lighter than after a fresh watering, it's a signal to check the soil.
-
Press your finger into the top inch of soil
-
If it feels dry to the touch, it’s a good time to water.
-
If it still feels moist, wait another day and check again.
-
-
-
Water thoroughly enough to moisten the root zone, but avoid drenching the soil to the point where water pools or runs off the bottom. The goal is even, gentle hydration—not over saturation.
-
Stress After Transplanting?
If some clones appear stressed up to three days after transplanting, consider this:
-
Check the rockwool cube inside the pot. Sometimes, the surrounding soil is moist but the cube is dry inside.
-
In that case, apply water directly to the cube, not the entire pot.
